Abstract The effects of lesions and stimulation of hypothalamic structures and related areas on gastric activity and pathology are reviewed. In addition, the role of the amygdala in stress-related gastric effects is discussed. It is proposed that the amygdala is in a strategic position to integrate stress-related inputs and, subsequently, influence the production of stress ulcers and hemorrhages, possibly via its hypothalamic connections.
