Does exposure to oxidative stress also affect nerve cells?

High levels of oxidative stress can damage brain cells and liver cells, leading to diseases such as dementia and hepatitis. Does oxidative stress have a negative effect not only on organs but also on nerves?

The Role of Nerves

Nerves are stretched throughout the body and are connected to the brain and spinal cord. The role of nerves is to transmit stimuli received in one part of the body to the brain and spinal cord, and conversely, to transmit signals from the brain and spinal cord to other parts of the body.

Therefore, when the nerves are damaged, the commands from the brain are not transmitted, and you cannot move even if you want to, or you cannot feel anything even if you touch something because the information is not transmitted to the brain.

The central nervous system plays a central role in the body. Among them, the nerves in the brain are classified as cerebral nerves, and the nerves in the spinal cord as spinal nerves.

Nerves other than the central nervous system are peripheral nerves, and systemic nerves are classified as motor nerves and sensory nerves, while autonomic nerves are classified as sympathetic nerves and parasympathetic nerves.

The autonomic nervous system is classified into sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. Although they are classified according to their location and role, they are all connected, and the information that occurs in the body is transmitted by neurotransmitters emitted from synapses in nerve cells.

When oxidative stress is high, it can cause damage to nerve cells.

Example of Peripheral Neuritis due to Diabetes

Let me explain a very simple example.

A complication of diabetes mellitus is diabetic neuropathy. This is the most frequent complication of diabetes, and it occurs at the earliest stage. As the disease progresses over a long period of time, the tips of the hands and feet become numb and numb, and the person loses all sense of touch. In the end, you will not know what you are touching at all, and the symptoms will be severe.

This is a condition not because of high blood sugar levels, but because increased blood sugar levels raise oxidative stress substances in the body, and oxidative stress substances cause inflammation and damage to the nerves.

And if you have lost all feeling in your hands and feet, it will be difficult to get them back.

However, if you have numbness in your hands, or if your sensation is a little strange, it is known that suppressing oxidative stress can improve the inflammation of the nerves and thus improve the symptoms.
