How Ketones Affect the Body
Have you ever heard of “ketone bodies”?
Recently, athletes and health conscious people have been talking about diets that use ketone bodies as a nutrient, along with carbohydrate restriction diets.
Some of you may have never heard about these ketone bodies before. In this article, I talk about ketones and how to lose weight.
What are ketone bodies?
Ketone bodies are produced when we eat fat, especially animal fat, which is broken down and released into the bloodstream. They are a very important source of nutrition for us.
Ketogenic Diet
There is a diet that uses ketone bodies as a nutrient. The term “ketogenic diet” is used to describe it. It is a diet that uses ketones as a nutrient, as ketones rise in the blood when fat or animal fats are consumed.
I have already mentioned that sugar (glucose) can be broken down into energy for activity, and in the same way, ketone bodies, which are derived from the breakdown of lipids, can also be broken down into energy for activity.
Therefore, the ketogenic diet is a diet in which you stop eating carbohydrates and instead eat fats to increase the amount of ketones in your body and use them as an energy source.
Caution! Misconceptions about ketone bodies
Ketone bodies are sometimes misunderstood because of their name.
There is a condition called “ketoacidosis” which is a very aggravated form of diabetes. This is a condition in which high blood pressure causes an increase in the amount of ketones produced as a byproduct in the blood, causing the blood to become acidic. It is often confused with ketoacidosis due to the similarity of the name “ketogenic diet”. However, ketoacidosis is a special condition that occurs in diabetes mellitus. It is completely different from the condition of ketoacidosis in diabetes mellitus, so the general public does not need to worry about it.
So what is the condition that causes ketoacidosis in diabetes?
Ketoacidosis occurs when diabetics do not eat and their nutritional status deteriorates. However, it is a condition that does not pose a major problem if it is properly controlled with medication, so it should not occur in normal people.
So, please remember that ketones are good for our bodies because they are an energy source. And the concept of the ketogenic diet, to eat a good amount of fat (oil) and use it as a source of nutrition, is very true.
Diet for Athletes
This ketogenic diet is often implemented by athletes and other people who are physically active a lot. This is because people who exercise a lot, such as athletes, need a great deal of energy for their activities, so they need to eat well to ensure that they have enough energy to win the game.
A famous tennis player has lost about 7 kilos of weight in the past two years. He did it by restricting carbohydrates.
Instead of limiting carbohydrates, he took in “fat” and “protein”. He says, “By changing my nutrients to fats and proteins, I was able to increase my basic strength and endurance. That’s what I’m trying”.
It is important to note that the increase in basal fitness and endurance is based on weight loss first. In this case, the content of the weight you lost is the body fat. It is only by restricting carbohydrates, which are the source of body fat, and taking in enough calories from fat and protein that you can be in such good condition as an athlete.
Considering the fact that not only tennis players, but also soccer players and other athletic players actually do this, it is safe to say that this is a very good diet method to eat fat and build up basic strength.
