Diseases that are closely related to oxidative stress
The following is a list of diseases that are currently being studied in the Antioxidant Research Division of Gifu University that may be related to oxidative stress. Although the research is still in progress, evidence is beginning to be obtained as a result of the research.
The details have been introduced in individual articles, but we will introduce them all together in this article.
Diabetes
The first and most popular disease is diabetes mellitus.
This is caused by elevated blood sugar levels, and the elevated blood sugar causes the mitochondria to release large amounts of oxidative stress substances.
Cancer
And then there is cancer. It is now known that cancer is more likely to form when oxidative stress is high. Therefore, if you have diabetes, your risk of developing cancer increases two to four times.
And when you have cancer, the cancer cells themselves emit large amounts of oxidative stress substances that suppress the immune system.
Atherosclerosis
There is something called LDL (low-density lipoprotein) that carries cholesterol in our body.
Normally, this LDL can move in and out of the walls of blood vessels in the body, but when it becomes rusty, or oxidized, it cannot pass through the walls of blood vessels and becomes lodged in them.
This leads to the formation of blood clots and the formation of arteriosclerosis. In other words, arteriosclerosis is also caused by the body becoming rusty.
Dementia (Alzheimer’s disease)
Another example is dementia. There is a disease called Alzheimer’s disease, and very high levels of oxidative stress have been measured in localized areas of the brain in Alzheimer’s disease.
Cranial nerve disease
Oxidative stress is also associated with stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and ALS.
Allergic diseases
There is a disease called allergy.
Typical examples are hay fever, atopic dermatitis, and allergic asthma, all of which are related to oxidative stress.
Inflammatory diseases
Inflammatory diseases are also all related to oxidative stress.
One of the most famous inflammatory diseases suffered by a famous politician is called colonic disease.
In this disease, the mucous membrane of the colon is exposed to very high oxidative stress, which causes inflammation.
Finally.
It is generally accepted that 150 out of all the diseases that exist are related to oxidative stress, but it is safe to assume that this is true for most diseases.
